Kalu Rinpoche was born again in his own monastery in the Darjeeling District of West Bengal, India as the son of his previous life’s nephew and lifelong attendant, Lama Gyaltsen, and the mother Drolkar. He was recognized as the incarnation of Khabje Kalu Rinpoche, our dearly beloved teacher, by His Eminence Tai Situ Rinpoche in 1992, who said that he had received definite signs from Khabje Kalu Rinpoche himself. His Holiness the Dalai Lama confirmed the recognition of Kalu Rinpoche as well. Kalu Rinpoche’s monastery, Samdrub Darjay Choling, was making offerings to the special Shangpa lineage protector Chagdrukpa at the time of his birth on September 17, 1990. Rainbows appeared in the sky like at the time of previous Kalu Rinpoche’s paranirvana

When he was eight years old the young Kalu Rinpoche entered into study and practice with the Ven. Bokar Rinpoche, the heart son of his previous incarnation, at Bokar Monastery in Mirik, Darjeeling. During the six to seven years he had with Bokar Rinpoche, Yangtsi Kalu Rinpoche studied and practiced in both the Dagpo and Shangpa lineages learning many sadhanas, Buddhist philosophy, mind training, Tibetan calligraphy and many other dharma subjects. Following the paranirvana of Bokar Rinpoche in August of 2004, the next February Yangtsi Rinpoche entered into the Shangpa three year retreat in Mirik. He successfully completed his retreat in September of 2008 and then assumed his responsibilities for his own monastery, for his disciples, and for his centers worldwide. Please see Rinpoche’s monastery’s website http://www.paldenshangpa.org.

Kalu Rinpoche PrayingLama Palden was very happy to be able to interview Kalu Rinpoche at Sherab Ling in August 2009. In Rinpoche's own words his approach is as follows: "I want to be a friend to everyone. Being able to be a friend to people is a very good part of life and of Buddhism. If one is a friend, then people listen when their friend speaks to them. I don't want to act like I am somehow above others— this is not the point. I want to help all sentient beings, which in this moment means human beings— they are the ones that I can try to help now. I want to help them to be happy, to have a good life, and share with them how to practice [dharma] so they are ready when the time of death comes.

Joyfully we announce that Kalu Rinpoche will be at his centers in Hong Kong and Taiwan in November of 2009. February through April of 2010 he will be in Europe at his centers there, and he will be in North and South America beginning in late summer of 2010.
